Carr Jam 1981 Despite coming off a monster ballad with Hot in the Shade's Michael Bolton-penned "Forever," Kiss was plagued by instability due to Simmons and Stanley's extravagance; worse, drummer Eric Carr succumbed to cancer in November 1991. But even with the grunge movement in full effect, Kiss was luckily recognized as a major influence on everyone from Trent Reznor to Lenny Kravitz -- their '70s legacy intact despite the band's often dubious choices in the '80s. And even though they, too, were on the brink of commercial extinction, being savvy businessmen first and foremost, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley fully understood the lay of the land. Not only did they need to make a definitive record, they needed to completely re-invent themselves, visually and sonically. The first step was to secure hard rock veteran Eric Singer to fill Carr's shoes; next, the band rekindled its relationship with producer Bob Ezrin. In 1992 KISS needed to make a musical statement with their next album. The previous two studio albums had seen the band lose focus and fall into the trap of looking for a big Pop Metal hit. So, being savvy in business, they rose to the task by putting the pieces into place. Revenge may not be perfect, but no KISS album is. It's got several great tracks ("Unholy," "Thou Shalt Not," "Heart of Chrome," "Domino," "I Just Wanna") and several other strong tracks ("Tough Love," "Spit," "Paralyzed"). The previously released cover song, "God Gave Rock and Roll To You II," was solid, and they did a great job of reworking it into a KISS song. "Take It Off," is solid, musically, but juvenile, lyrically. "Every Time I Look At You," is a good Power Ballad, but it is out of place on an album like Revenge, and Paul's raspy vocal undermines the song. But the positives far outweigh the negatives, musically, and the audio production is outstanding. The album is crisp, clear, and punchy, while still retaining a bit of that 70's dirt & grit. It sounds the way a KISS album should sound. So, overall, Revenge is almost exactly the album KISS needed following the lost years of Crazy Nights and Hot In The Shade. Unfortunately for them, the music landscape was changing in 1992 and it came out a year too late to have a big impact sales-wise. But despite the album's mildly disappointing sales numbers it is still one of their better albums.
